"What do you do when you're not sure?" The principal of a convent school experiences dire conflict when situations arise with a young priest. More than what may be his progressive ideas weigh on sister Aloysius's mind as she waives protocol and locks horns with Father Flynn.
Sheila Bowman, as director, could not have cast the play more accurately as Eric Holmgren’s brilliantly delivered performance of Father Brendan Flynn, binds the tight dramatic performances of Maureen Cusack as Sister Aloysius Beauvier and Brittney Brownsberger as Sister James together. The complex relationships of those representing change with in the church and those representing tradition, are played out with expertise that we do not often see from a community theatre.
Joy Becker’s debut with Vancouver Island theatre as Mrs. Muller, delivers an expressive performance with her rendition of the Mother of the only black child with the convent school. Also, a notable performance and angelic singing voice from the young choir boy.
It is with great acting ability the cast are able to transform audiences to a time and space within the story so as they may ignore the “high school play” looking set, and a few awkward blocking moments, that are a bit of a distraction, and see the brilliant performances for just that. Brilliant. Once again live theatre, presents us with entertaining and thought provoking performances that are a privilege to see. I hope you are able to catch one of the last performances of “Doubt” playing at the Bailey Studio in Nanaimo - 8 pm curtain Oct 16 & 17, 2009.
