I have been acting in Nanaimo awhile now and I cannot say enough about Western Edge and the man behind it.
Frank Moher, has worked tirelessly on his baby and gets very little back, tangibly speaking that is. However, you just have to see him talking about Western Edge and what it stands for, to know how he feels about it and you know it is way beyond monetary gains that rewards Frank.
Western Edge is an important venue for not only actors, but writers and other creative minds as well. One could say, is almost critical to theatre in Nanaimo as it a playground for theatrical folk but one in which they get paid to think outside the box, pun intended! I haven't seen any theatre like it on Vancouver Island. Generally you have to be an equity actor to get any kind of pay and if you aren't equity.... well you better have a job, amd then you better have a boss who allows time off to "play."
Frank knows that actors and writers alike struggle to make ends meet while pursuing their passions. In community theatre you have to commit to 3 months of rehearsal with no pay and then 3 weeks committed to the run. That is not to say it is not rewarding, any time an actor gets to act is reward enough, and if it isn't then they are in the wrong business. But in Frank's theatre you have a very limited rehearsal period, which in my opinion ups your game. but even then Frank takes into consideration your previous committments. Now that's a guy with not only his own interest but his actors interest at heart. I have not met a person more committed to the theatre and her people than Frank. He is leading the charge towards new and innovative theatre while giving new talent a place to stretch their creative wings. Thank you Frank, and long may your baby live!
